Boots, Bulls and Black Excellence: Black Rodeo USA
Saturday night in Humble, Texas, was a reminder that Black cowboy culture isn't something new. It's a part of American history that's still very much alive.
2LOUD was on-site for the inaugural Lone Star Invitational Black Rodeo, presented by Black Rodeo USA at the Humble Civic Center & Arena Complex. The event brought together cowboys, cowgirls, families, and rodeo fans for an evening celebrating Western heritage and competition.
And there was plenty to see.
From the excitement inside the arena to the cowboy hats, boots, and Western style throughout the crowd, the event offered a different kind of Saturday night entertainment.
But beyond the action, there was a bigger story.
Black cowboys have been part of the American West for generations, even if their contributions haven't always received the recognition they deserve. Events like Black Rodeo USA help bring that history into focus while giving today's riders an opportunity to continue the tradition.
For 2LOUD, the experience was particularly interesting because of where we'd been just a few hours earlier.
Our Saturday started with Dîner en Blanc Houston, surrounded by elegant fashion and carefully coordinated all-white looks. By evening, we'd traded that atmosphere for dirt, denim, cowboy hats, and the excitement of rodeo competition.
Same city. Same weekend. Two very different expressions of Black excellence.
That's the range we love seeing.
Black culture isn't limited to one environment or aesthetic. It can be sophisticated and polished, rugged and competitive, or all of those things at once.
Black Rodeo USA gave us an opportunity to appreciate a piece of that culture through the people who continue to embrace the cowboy lifestyle.
And judging by the atmosphere, the tradition has plenty of life left in it.
