Houston came together in a powerful way to honor the life and legacy of Michael "5000" Watts on Monday, February 16, 2026. Known for his heart, humility, and dedication to the culture, Watts was celebrated as more than a DJ—he was a pillar of Houston music.

The day began with a private funeral service at Luke Humble Church, attended by family, friends, and industry leaders including Slim Thug, Mike Jones, and OG Ron C. Tributes reflected on Watts’ legendary run on 97.9 The Box and his impact on the Chopped and Screwed movement.

Later, more than 500 people gathered at Bell Tower for the community “King’s Day” celebration. Guests experienced a visual journey through Watts’ life with photos, video tributes, and memorabilia displays, while DJs brought his signature sound back to life.

Between musical tributes, Christian Menefee presented a proclamation honoring Watts’ cultural influence. His wife, Tammie Watts, shared heartfelt words of gratitude, thanking the city for its overwhelming support.

The evening closed with an emotional procession, as a horse-drawn carriage carried Watts to his final resting place, followed by more than 100 slab cars. Friends and collaborators including Paul Wall and Lil Keke stood alongside the family in tribute.

At the heart of it all was a deep sense of gratitude for Michael "5000" Watts and the life he lived in service to the culture. Watts didn’t just play music—he built platforms, opened doors, and made space for voices that might have otherwise gone unheard. He believed in Houston before the world caught on, and he never stopped pouring into his city.

Whether on the radio, behind the scenes, or mentoring the next generation, Watts moved with integrity, humility, and purpose. He treated legends and newcomers with the same respect, always leading with love. His impact can still be heard in every slowed-down record, every slab ride, and every artist who dared to dream bigger because he believed in them first.

Michael “5000” Watts leaves behind more than a legacy—he leaves behind a standard. A standard of excellence, loyalty, and community that will continue to inspire Houston for generations to come.
